In Memoriam: Omar Peikrishvili

We were very saddened to hear of the passing of Omar Peikrishvili, the former director of one of the orphanages CCRFund supports. Omar spent his life promoting the arts and education in his home country of Georgia, and he directed the Telavi orphanage (a very tough task!) for more than twenty years.


Omar Peikrishvili was born on June 20th, 1941 in Telavi, Georgia. The son of a respectable and famous teacher, Omar finished at the 1st secondary school of Telavi and was sent to the nearby village of Napareuli as a worker and dance teacher.	In 1970, Omar graduated from the Telavi Teachers’ Training Institute. He worked there until 1983, when he was sent to be the director of a Telavi orphanage. He directed the orphanage for 23 years.

During a part of that time, Omar was also a member of the Telavi mayor’s office, where he was given various medals and awards. He also collaborated with the Telavi State Theatre, producing dances for many performances.	From 1961-1970, Omar worked as a dance teacher in Telavi's Secondary School No. 3. He also taught at Soviet Pioneers and worked as a private dance tutor. He was the leader of the Telavi folk dance group in a 1967 competition of Georgian Art and Literature in Moscow, Russia. Two years later he became the leader of the Music and Dance Society of Telavi.

In 2009 he initiated the formation of the Telavi Georgian Folk Dance Group, and he consulted for the group until his death on June 19th, 2009. He is pictured here with his grandson, also named Omar.	Omar with one of the CCRFund founders, Edythe Stromme. We'll miss him!
