Paris Pop-up Boutique

While on vacation last month Kyle Olmon was able to visit the new space that antique pop-up book dealer and collector Jacques Desse opened last year in the north of Paris.  Expanding on the location in the Marché Dauphine, Jacques and his partner Thibaut Brunessaux created a wonderland of rare and antique books in great building dating back to 1873.  The boutique du livre animé is located at 3 rue Pierre l'Ermite and open by appointment only so please contact him at: http://jacquesdesse.free.fr/

Wall to wall shelves house many rare and lovely titles, and we spend hours checking out these treasures and hearing many interesting details on the recent acquisitions.

In the glass case, away from grubby hands, rested fine examples of art books and children’s literature, including two works from Lothar Meggendorfer!

Downstairs was the exhibition space where the pop-up artist UG displayed many of his works last month.  Even though we missed his show, there were many interesting books and ephemera to check out.

I have never seen this many Kubasta books all in one place since the exhibit at Columbia College in Chicago two years ago.  So many new titles to add to my wish list!

Jacques shares some of his current favorites with us including some rare French appearances of Curious George and Mickey Mouse.

There is case after case of pop-ups and movable books from all over the world.  I found a fun series of pop-ups from Japan and great paper automata from Germany.

This animated display from the 1940’s stands guard near the front door.  Its mechanical movements must have caught the eyes of many generations of French children.

In the boutique, many classic fairytales from antique pop-ups share space with a few contemporary adaptations that should look familiar to visitors of this site!

So next time you are in Paris be sure to visit Jacques and Thibaut at the Boutique du livre animé, but remember to call ahead and get ready to discover your new favorite pop-ups.
