Rare 1612 Architecture movable!
We're starting a new section here at RobertSabuda.com! We want to be able to share with you some of the more interesting pop-up and movable books that have been created in the past. The books will be both from Robert's collection and the collection of others. The first selection is an extremely rare type of book with paper movable parts called volvelles.
"The Perspective" was published in 1612 and contains a variety of unusual and intriguing movable parts. These two pages show movables called volvelles (from the latin, meaning "to turn"). The paper pieces are each attached to the page of the book, through the center, with a small piece of string. This allows the pieces to completely rotate... ...to reveal more artwork underneath. Most volvelles are used to calculate astronomical observations, tell the future or clarify the complexities of a religious calendar.
What makes "The Perspective" so unusual is that it's volvelles are used for a completely different purpose. Many of the engravings in the book deal with perspective, architecture planning and construction. By rotating the volvelles one can view the construction plan from different angles... ...while still having the original plan available for viewing underneath.
"The Perspective" also has some aptly named movable paper pieces. This is a top view of a small stand-up rectangular piece of paper (at left) with a small hole in it. At right is what, at first glance, appears to be a strange engraving of squiggles and straight lines. But by peering through the small hole in the rectangular piece of paper, the strange engraving is now viewed in perspective. It is revealed to be a man's face! "The Perspective" also contains a variety of beautifully engraved flaps of architectural scenes and is valued at $35,000!
