Posters became an important part of Kubasta’s illustrated work and perhaps gave him a love for the “big and bold” which would become a trademark of his pop-up books. This cheery, idealized advertisement for sunglasses also shows the beginning of Kubasta’s use of die-cut holes in the front covers of books. But Kubasta is best known to us as the creator of some of the most beloved pop-ups ever made to entertain children.
Some of his books are small jewels, tiny gems meant to be enjoyed by the smallest of hands. While others practically explode from the pages. This castle, complete with jousting knights, is from Kubasta’s Panascopic series. Classic tales were also loved by Kubasta. Over the course of his long career, he retold, illustrated and paper engineered dozens of titles.
A sliver of light highlights the magic of one of the greatest paper engineers the world has ever known. Paper engineer Matthew Reinhart stands in awe of the master’s work. Robert says come see the glory of Kubasta in Florida before the exhibit closes on April 30th!
