Pop-up Exhibits from Spain!

Pop-up books have made a big splash in Spain due to the passion of collectors Ana Ortega and Alvaro Gutierrez! They have more than 900 titles in their collections located in the small town of Palencia.

Ana and Alvaro have curated many of exhibitions of pop-ups across Spain. Currently they have an exhibit in Santiago de Compostela, a city in the North of Spain.
Ana and Alvaro's exhibits include a variety a titles including antique books as well as hand drawn books, like the volvelle at lower right. Each exhibit is jam packed with pop-up books for Spanish audiences who may not necessarily be familiar with this type of book. Ana and Alvaro place their books in bright, modern display cases to that the books themselves can shine!
Many of the books are in Spanish, but English titles, such as Robert's The Night Before Christmas, have a prominent place, too. Since many pop-up books are devoted to the natural world, many of the cases feature animals and the natural world. Some of the best paper engineers and artists can be found in displayed books by Barbara Cooney, Brian Froud and Chuck Murphy.
Alvaro shows a group of amazed children that the turn of a page in a pop-up book can reveal a magical moment! Matthew Reinhart's Pop-up Book of Phobias shows that pop-up books can also be made with an grown-up audience in mind. But the exhibits aren't just for children! Two "big kids" take a moment to admire Robert's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
