World of Pop-Ups!
The Force is strong at the studio!

30 years ago a movie came out the changed cinema; it also changed the world of Matthew Reinhart.  In celebration of the anniversary for everyone’s favorite sci-fi film, Matthew has created the ultimate pop-up reference to Star Wars.  He crammed all the best characters into this massive book, and we’ll take a sneak peek at the evolution of one of the most legendary figures in the Star Wars universe.  Stay posted to this site for more details and remember that Star Wars: A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy will be in stores in time for your holiday gift giving!

No, this is not his usual outfit, but Matthew really wanted to get into character when he began designing Darth Vader. That helmet sure gets hot in the summer sun!

Amidst piles of books and figures, Matthew fortified his extensive knowledge of all things Star Wars to write the text, plus the good folks at Lucasbooks were happy to supply any visual reference for the pop-up design.

Here is one of the early pencil sketches from Matthew as he brings his artistic style to this well known figure.  After dozens of years drawing Darth Vader, he could almost sketch him blindfolded!

.

Matthew takes a break from drawing and creates a wonderful pop-up of Lord Vader rising from the page and drawing his lightsaber.  (Yes, it actually glows!!)

The pop-up is tightened up and now the pencil sketches are applied.  Darth Vader’s menacing presence begins to take shape as we layout the rest of the page.

With custom papers and a skilled hand, Matthew finishes the cut paper collage artwork.  This picture of the final design is so cool it has everyone here at the studio ready to join the dark side.

But you can’t please everyone!  Vader was very eager to share with Matthew that he wanted to have another larger pop-up constructed in his honor. Or else!

He didn’t have to tell the willing paper engineer twice.  Luckily, Matthew has been designing various Darth Vader’s helmet over many years!  This early pencil version of the book shows the formidable face.

This shot of the final color spread doesn’t do the pop-up justice.  Once you get the book in your hands you will be able to catch a glimpse of the man behind the mask.  This epic pop-up book is truly a marvel to behold!
