Pop-up work from Pratt!
As many of you know Pratt Institute continues its program of paper engineering to nurture the budding pop-up bookmakers of tomorrow. Matthew Reinhart has been teaching the course for the past two years (and with the help of new studio designer Kyle Olmon "tag-teaching") his students have been producing some terrific work!
The student's first assignment this semester was to create a pop-up completely in white (that way they're not distracted with color in the beginning) using three different mechanisms that they'd been taught. Some of the results were outrageous including this student's dorm room shower complete with tiled floor! Many students choose to create animals because some of the mechanisms they learn deal with movement. This cat playing with a ball of yarn practically uncurls off the page as the yarn twists! Since Pratt Institute encourages diversity in its artistic expression sometimes the pop-ups lean towards abstract in their design. This giraffe has limited movement but is beautiful in its design.
Paper can be cut into so many wonderful shapes, including feathers! A delicate flamingo graces this pop-up and even flaps its wings. A ballerina steps out from behind the curtain in this lovely pop-up. The student has begun to investigate the idea of depth by cutting lace into the skirt allowing the viewer to see far beyond the figure. Hearts explode in this complex structure. The value of only using white card stock to create the pop-ups is shown here because the young pop-up maker begins to understand the importance of shapes in creating a 3-dimensional, moving form.
Sometimes the beauty of the pop-up lays in its simplicity. This elegant tree has no need to overpower us with movement, its simple form is enough. Some students have already begun to challenge themselves by tackling difficult pop-ups. The choice of an elephant is a good one for a pop-up, but the form must be big and impressive to deliver the full impact its creator intends. A slithering lizard twists out of this ingenious pop-up. Now that the pop-up complete in white (and functions properly) this student is ready to move on to color.
Reminiscent of a skeleton, this abstract turtle is the first step in teaching a young paper engineer the basic of pop-ups. And that rule is, there are no rules as long as the pop-up works!
