The making of MBS Celebration! |
Thousands of pop-up and movable book lovers around the world are awaiting the arrival of the Movable Book Society's 10th Anniversary pop-up book "Celebration."
This MBS project has been in the works for over 2 years and is on the fast track to arrive in September for the organization's 10th birthday party. This month's Sneak Peeks goes behind-the-scenes for the making of this spectacular pop-up book!

| Before any of the reproduction movable and pop-ups were created, the original pop-ups had to be disassembled and then a full-scale version recreated in white. This allowed the paper engineers, like Matthew Reinhart, to get a better understanding on the how the mechanisms work.
One new pop-up appears in "Celebration," which shows Benedictine monk Matthew Paris' presenting his first volvelle to a new generation of movable book lovers. Designer Sam Ida makes final adjustments to the mechanism that he and Robert Sabuda created.
Biography author Ellen Rubin stops by the NYC studio for a visit with Sam, Matthew and Robert to go over the printed proofs that have just arrived from Hong Kong. The pop-up pieces and the pages are all printed on just a few sheets.

| The original antique book "Red Riding Hood" by Dean & Son is laid down next to the printed sheet to check the color printing accuracy. In Dean & Son's original book the color was added by hand using watercolor.
Kubasta's "Christopher Columbus" is brought in next for color checking. Fortunately for the team, the first proofs of "Celebration" are excellent and the color is rich and bright.
"Celebration" is being printed and hand assembled by Hua Yang Printing in China. Sam Ida from the NYC studio has just returned from there where he got a first look at the project in production.

| In the Paper Engineering Department at Hua Yang a designer cuts out pieces of Christopher Columbus' ships and will hand build a sample to check for paper engineering accuracy.
One of the more complex movables in "Celebration" is by Lothar Meggendorfer (with 21st century refinements by Andy Baron and Kyle Olmon). This mechanism contains over a dozen rivets to create an amazing amount of movement!
Final samples of "Celebration" are prepared for the design teams and others at Hua Yang to check for printing and hand assembly accuracy.
