| The making of the NEW pop-up in the 10th Anniversary edition of The Christmas Alphabet.
| When Orchard books announced that they would be creating a special anniversary edition of Robert's groundbreaking pop-up book from 1994 everyone wondered what could be done to make the book even more special than the original. The answer: create a NEW pop-up!

| The first step was decided the subject matter for the new pop-up. Almost every icon of Christmas had been used in the making of the original book except one: a wreath! Here a very simple series of circular shapes is created to give the impression of a moving wreath.
But the wreath by itself seemed very ordinary, lovely to look at but it needed something more. Since Robert often uses mice in his books, this seemed like a perfect opportunity for his "White Mouse" to make a cameo appearance.
One of the challenges, however, in including the White Mouse was the fact that the pop-ups in The Christmas Alphabet are somewhat small. In order to make the mouse the correct size within the wreath he needed to be VERY small!

| A separate piece of "leaves" was created at the front of the pop to attach the White Mouse's mechanism (which allows him to peek out from behind the wreath when the pop-up is opened!).
At the last minute of design it was decided that the mouse would have a red hat just like Santa's. But even better the hat in the finished book would be foil-stamped a shimmering, holiday red!
The wreath's mechanism grows more and more complex as attempts are made to create more movement. In the final pop-up, both the top and the bottom of the wreath will expand outwards to create a full, 3-dimensional circular shape.

| After Robert has completed the design, he hands it off to studio designer Patricia. She will make any necessary adjustments or refinements to ensure that the pop-up works correctly.
Working carefully with scissors, Patricia will trim any necessary areas that may be causing trouble or need a little extra attention. Although the pop-up looks simple it is an extremely complex mechanism and everything must work perfectly.
The final white design is complete. Digital die lines will be created and colors will be chosen. If you would like to get your very own SIGNED copy of this special anniversary edition come to the Gift Shop NOW!
