September Sneak Peek   A Dazzling display of Movable Books on view at the Los Angeles Central Library!

The Los Angeles Central Library's fantastic exhibit of pop-up books from the collection of Waldo Hunt will be on display until January 12, 2003.

Mr. Hunt's books are featured in the Getty Gallery, Second Floor, Main building 630 West Fifth St. in downtown Los Angeles.

For more information please call the Los Angeles Public Library: 213-228-7040.

Waldo Hunt (at left, with pop-up maker David Carter) is largely credited with reviving the genre of pop-up books in the 1960's with his company Intervisual Books.

Intervisual (and it's sister company Intervisual Communications) is the world's leading creator and producer of children's educational, novelty and interactive books.

The oldest movable books in the world have moving paper parts called volvelles. Paper discs are turned to calculate astronomical movements.   Tunnel books were very popular in the early and mid 1800's. The exhibit features several tunnel books all in exquisite condition.   A view through the hole of one of the tunnel books. Who knew you could fit so many people in one little book?!

Robert Sabuda and Guillermo Holguin (of Carvajal, manufacturer of many of the exhibition's books) take a brief moment to say hello at the pre-opening.

Mr. Holguin's company has manufactured almost all of Robert's pop-up books
The Hunt Collection also contains many elaborate Valentine's Day cards which were the perfect gift in the early 1900's.       A huge reproduction of one of Ernest Nister's revolving, dissolve mechanisms.
